Building on Max Weber’s observation that the state’s reliance formal tools leads to governance for some and dehumanization others, we investigate administrative standards as a social mechanism of stratification sorts people into categories allocates symbolic financial resources. Specifically, examine how at time increased family diversity, use end-of-life discounts certain kin.
